AI Demonstrations

To understand the implications of generative AI affects education, it can help to see practical examples in action. Below are several ways AI can aid in the learning experience. Think about how you could modify or build upon these examples for your own instruction.

AI for Programming

Generative AI's ability to write code from natural language instructions is revolutionizing software development. This capability empowers individuals with limited coding experience to create their own applications with unprecedented efficiency. As someone with only basic HTML and CSS knowledge, I never considered myself a programmer. However, through the use of Claude, an AI assistant, I was able to develop the following web-based flashcard app using nothing more than descriptive text prompts.

The creation of such a tool would have been nearly impossible for someone like me before the advent of generative AI. At the very least, it would have required a significant investment of time in learning to code, followed by extensive trial and error. Instead, this app was developed through several iterations of AI-assisted coding.

This flashcard tool serves primarily as a demonstration of AI's capabilities as a coding assistant. It's important to remember that AI technology is continuously improving. The implications of this rapid advancement for the future of coding and software development are profound and worth careful consideration.

AI as a Thought Partner

In this demonstration, I showcase the potential of AI functioning as a virtual thought partner. This concept has the potential to alter the way in which we engage in learning to deepen understanding. The implications for this kind of technology also bring an imperative to understand how AI models like Pi function, in order to ensure they are used responsibly and ethically. By mindfully integrating AI thought partners into the learning experience, we open up the possibilities for new methods of personalized and engaging learning that weren't previously possible.

AI in Virtual Case Studies

This demonstration inside H5P exemplifies how human expertise, blended with generative AI tools, can create  groundbreaking learning experiences. Through the combination of generative AI text, voices, images, and video, the system breathes life into virtual simulations, empowering learners to interact with the content in authentic and exciting new ways.

The simulation in this demonstration was developed as part of the OpenRN project - funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to create OER Nursing Resources.

Tools used in this demonstration: H5P, ChatGPT, Midjourney, Play.ht, Microsoft Azure Speech Studio, D-ID

AI in the Role of the Learner

This roleplay prompt places the AI in the shoes of an undergraduate student, and the user as an instructor, guiding the AI through a specified topic. By encouraging the AI to pose questions in the manner of a novice learner, it offers the user an opportunity to articulate and explain concepts, reinforcing their own understanding in the process. This technique leverages the pedagogical principle that teaching is one of the most effective ways to learn. Meanwhile, by having the AI critique the user's explanations, it provides valuable feedback on the clarity and depth of the instruction, creating a dynamic and iterative learning experience for the user.
